Epson Stylus CX4600 Specifications
Whether it’s your home or a small office, the multifunction Epson Stylus CX4600 will help get the job done for a reasonable price. This compact all-in-one sits at the bottom of Epson’s small office/home office range, yet it delivers quite a bit for its £86 price (inc. VAT). Epson’s Stylus CX4600 offers an inviting expansion to the multifunctional printers that the company has provided for the past year or so.
Early in the life of the all-in-one, Epson implemented DURABrite inks, which, at their core, promise prints that not only offer bright and vivid colors but also ones that are resistant to water and fading. Over the years and multiple product generations, this has stood up well, if there was any truth, to begin with. Even with our tests pushing to the limits of its printing capabilities, these prints held up with wet hands and smudging. Rolls of prints left at the bottom of busy, frequently-distributed stacks remained as legible as the top print, providing evidence of the meaning of ‘durable.’ Speed was never any claim to fame, though it also has held true regarding uptime. What the Epson Stylus CX4600 lacks in pace, it more than makes up for in quality, particularly with standard documents. With text, that quality is good enough to print documents at home; small fonts were clear and legible, while even 5-point fonts looked professional.
Operationally, the CX4600 is refreshingly user-friendly. Ordinary, garden-variety installation is fast and easy, devoid of the often perplexing set-up process we’ve encountered with many all-in-one devices. Equally straightforward and sedate is maintenance, thanks in part to an easy and mess-free cartridge replacement scheme, a feature all of us have mumbled at one time or another. Has anyone figured out a better way to do this? However, without an LCD, the need to refer to a computer or manual for help on more complex printing tasks can be tedious.
Running costs are a critical factor in deciding which printer to purchase. In this respect, the Stylus CX4600 straddles the line between efficiency and expense. Using individual ink cartridges is more economical because you only have to replace the colors you use. On the other hand, with the CX4600 being a dated unit, you’re likely to face escalated costs for ink replacement as it enters the sunset of its service life and supplies run short. The Epson Stylus CX4600 hails from when printers had become multi-purpose tools, yet they were simple and relatively affordable. It makes a good option for those needing a no-frills printer that can perform the basics well without requiring advanced features commonly found in more recent all-in-ones.
